Banded Blowfly
It is amazing to find that these pesky critters can be so colorful.

About Me
- SAPhotographs (Joan)
- My name is Joan and I have lived and worked in the African bush for more than 20 years so I am definitely not a "city girl". My hobbies and interest are anything to do with the outdoors especially photography. At the end of last year I was introduced to macro photography and have discovered a whole new world. I have traveled a lot and love chatting to people, so I correspond with people all over the world. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have: macromail2 at vodamail dot co dot za. Thanks for visiting my blog. :)

Very nice shots Joan! They are so colorful and pretty.
I am guessing this one is real and not claymation because even you can make wings out of Play Dough!
LOL
How can you call them pesky? They don't eat much... come on, let them have a piece of cake!!!
Craig
Wow, was I first?
Did everyone sleep in? Latter than me???
Craig
My goodness, here I go and REALLY make it out of playdough and you think it is real!!! Just shows you can never be satisfied with what I do. Either way I loose out. LOL!! LOL!!
No, I will NOT give him any cake. It is mine!! Mine!! Mine!! LOL!!
Okay here is a serious comment:
Hello Craig, I am glad you were first in line today. Maybe it is a holiday there and you did not realize it and got up to go to work that is why everyone was still sleeping.
That fly sure was colorful. We have many nice looking species here but I hate flies at the best of times. :)
What a pretty fly and the photos are great! My macro are not usually that detailed. By the way, I love that red centipede (?) on the sidebar. Very colorful! I can see why you like bugs...you see so many interesting ones.
Erm...is it a vampire fly?? It has such disgustingly bulging eyes~! But I have to say that it is a good shot. Don't they usually fly off before you get one metre next to it?? LOL
It is quite dry these days- and gloomy too! At least today is better :O)
Sreddy
It takes an artist like you to make one of those appear so beautiful!
Hi Joan, the real colorful ones around here are the ones that hang around horse pooh. As much as we dislike flies at our picnics, they do have a purpose. That being said, these are really pleasing photos.
Thanks Mary. I guess a lot depends on your camera when a person wants detail on these small things. That red millipede is magnificent. I am realy fascinated wit my bug world and really say thank you to the person who started me out doing photography of them.
Hello Sreddy. You have to move very slowly when trying to get pics of these bugs, but it has become a challenge for me to do so and have figured out a lot of what-not-to-do's. :)
You are right, the last 2 days have been a great improvement to what it ahs been. I hate this cold weather even if it is still warmer on this northern side of the mountain.
That is very kind of you to say Eleanor. Thanks.
Hello Steve, I guess most bugs have their place but I do detest flies and cockroaches. Thanks. :)
If you look hard enough there's beauty in all nature. Yet I sure don't enjoy the obnoxious flies flying around my head or food. Outside I will tolerate them. But honestly if they come into my house I'll only invite them to leave thru open door once. Then swat!
LOL!! I have to agree with you Gaelyn. :)
Hi Joan. I've been away far too long...sorry.
I agree that they may not be very endearing but you sure captured their colours. Lol FAB.
I haven't had much time to write, but I do check out your site on a regular basis. Well worth my time! Cheers from the Amazon.
I agree with you. They are disgusting, BUT really attractive. Love the detail of the wings.
B.
Thanks EB. Lovely of you to visit again. :)
Hello Steven, thanks for the kind words. It is a wonderful surprise to hear from you again. I hope you are doing well and I am looking forward to seeing more from the Amazon. It is a magnificent place and I love your posts.
Thanks Becky. :)
I'm running behind as usually lately...so what's the purpose of a fly??
This one, I can imagine: sitting pretty. In the 2nd pic it almost looks like a toy - I think that's what Craig means with playdough? Boy, he's on a roll, lately, isn't he?
Hello Jeannette. The only purpose I can find for a fly is to be an irritant to everything around it!! :)
Lets face it, I am never going to get Craig to behave like a gentleman!! Then again, do I really want him too? He is just full of fun as he is and secretly I like it. Please don't tell him that though. LOL!!
Excellent close up Joan but not my favorite subject :) anyway time to make you a little jelious I am off to the Kruger tomorrow be back next week :))
Oh I do hate you Philip!! This is not fair at all!! You could at least have invited me to go along to carry your camera and luggage. LOL!! Were are you going to be staying? Enjoy it my friend and bring us back lots of excellent pictures again. :) I will be thinking of you.
Oh, these green flies are very widespread, and live not only in South Africa. I can show photo of the same fly, found near my house in Russia :-)
Hello Brian. That is very interesting that they are found there too. A lot of insects are the same in different countries. Thanks and welcome to my blog. :)
help me! Vincent Price/the fly
Now that goes back a long way Ken!! I remember paying 5 cents for movies then. :) Good to hear from you again. :)
I thought of you this afternoon Joan. I was was kneeling on the ground trying to get a decent photo of a katydid nymph and then a butterfly...(which I did ID yea)..Man.. I need new knees if I am going to take photos of insects..lol...
Joan wow what a close up. BTW I love your photos of the Meerkats, especially the third one down, lol. Thanks for the laughs, Anna :)
Hello Michelle. If you have wonky knees, scrambling after insects is not a good thing to do. :) Now you know some of what I go through. LOL!!
Thanks Anna. You are welcome, they are such funny critters to watch!! :)
Joan: Now how long did it take you to Photo-Shop that bugger. Why didn't you let it show its teeth.
LOL!! I sure missed you these few days my friend. :)
This was a very old one Tom and its teeth had fallen out. LOL!
Again, absolutely amazing detail in your shots. I don't like flies but the ones like these are amazing in their coloring.
You are so kind. Thanks TB. One would definitely not think flies could be pretty. :)
Its very good photos of this flies.
Alternative energy
Thanks Amit.
