Sea Anemone

I was right in saying this was a difficult one although a few people guessed it was something from the sea so they were on the right track.
This is going to be the last Mystery Monday for a while. Thank you everyone for playing. It has been fun!!

The ornately colored sea anemone is named after the equally flashy terrestrial anemone flower.

A close relative of coral and jellyfish, anemones are stinging polyps that spend most of their time attached to rocks on the sea bottom or on coral reefs waiting for fish to pass close enough to get ensnared in their venom-filled tentacles.Their bodies are composed of an adhesive pedal disc, or foot, a cylindrical body, and an array of tentacles surrounding a central mouth. The tentacles are triggered by the slightest touch, firing a harpoon-like filament into their victim and injecting a paralyzing neurotoxin. The helpless prey is then guided into the mouth by the tentacles.
There are more than 1,000 sea anemone species found throughout the world’s oceans at various depths, although the largest and most varied occur in coastal tropical waters. They run the full spectrum of colors and can be as small as half an inch (1.25 centimeters) or as large as 6 feet (1.8 meters) across. Some anemones, like their coral cousins, establish symbiotic relationships with green algae. In exchange for providing the algae safe harbor and exposure to sunlight, the anemone receives oxygen and sugar, the bi-products of the algae's photosynthesis. They form another, more famous symbiotic alliance with clownfish, which are protected by a mucus layer that makes them immune to the anemone's sting. Clownfish live within the anemone’s tentacles, getting protection from predators, and the anemone snacks on the scraps from the clownfish’s meals.

The details on this sea anemone is incredible given the fact that you have shot this through the glass container. Nice Shot.

Hello Thomas. I took them at the aquarium a couple of weeks agao and an so pleased I did not get any of the glass glare on it. I sees I am getting better at taking these kinds of pictures. LOL!!

Hello Sara. I have to admit it was a tough one this week.
Take care too. :)

Hello Sreddy. Because of the 8 months of drought we had have not been able to take many photographs and need to wait for summer to come along again for more. It will be back round about the end of September I promise, maybe before if the weather is right.:)

You were so close in your guess of it being a shell. :)

Stupid Sea Anemononoienoe, or however you say that hard word!

LOL!! I do agree, it it not a word that rolls easily off the tongue, but have a martini or too in, and it gets worse. LOL!!

The next season of this is gong to be so tough I am going to offer hugs and kisses for all of them and the Better Science team does not have a hope and a prayer on getting any of them right. :)

Thanks for being such a wonderful sport on these MM days. I will miss them and your comments but it will not be long until sumer is back. :)

It was impossible...

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

Sorry Andrea. I knew it was not going to be an easy one. The only person I know who has done deep sea diving is Dale that is why I though he might get it right. :)

The only part I got right was the sea. I'm really not a big ocean person living in the desert. Yet I look forward to seeing the SA beaches.
As big as 6 feet, Wow, do they ever poison people?
I will miss MM, surely you have some archives to work from. And what will the Science Guys do? They must have a need to be right.

Thanks for thinking of us Gaelyn! Tom and I get no respect... no respect at all...

lol

Ugh, from what you describe these would be creatures to stay away from!

Whatever you need to do, the blog is yours:)
And Tom and Craig will no doubt find some reason to tease you and each other with LOL

I never in a thousand years would have guessed this one, BUT it has been so much fun. Do try it again sometime Joan.
Have a wonderful rest of the week.

Hello Gaelyn. I am just not keeping up this week and seem to be getting more and more behind. :)

Yes you were on the right track with your guess of something from the sea. I like to go down there about once every 5 years or so. It is nice to walk amongst the rock pools and see what is in them when the tide goes out. There are also a lot of different bugs in the vegetation. I hate walking on the beach and feeling that stinging sand. Yuck!!

As far as I know they do not poison people but I do not know enough about them.

The science guys are going to find it tough without having a place to show off their superior knowledge, especially you know who. LOL!! And they wont have anyone to pick on either. LOL!! I love both of them and their fantastic input to the MM's and will miss it. I just realized last night it has been going for almost half a year!! My goodness that is a long time. :)

Craig: Respect? Can you even spell it?? LOL!!

Okay, maybe you don't get respect but I do love you guys and you have always made me laugh at your answers. :) Thanks!!

MM is alive an well and will be back after a short break. :)

Hey even the TV has commercial breaks!!

Hello Jeannette. Yu are righ, they will never stop teasing me even if they have to do it on my normal blogs. LOL!! They are really fun to have around and I do like this ragging. :)

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

Hi Becky. I would not have guessed it either for sure!!

Have a great week too my friend.

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

Thanks Tammie Lee. It is really a beautiful creature. Many years ago I did a bit of diving and the creatures down there are spectacular.

Wow..that is really cool. I didn't even bother guessing on that one, but it is lovely.

I didn't play this week. Even living by the Atlantic, I never would have gotten this one.

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

Hello Mary. It was not an easy one this week. LOL!!

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

Hhello Steve. Unless one has gone diving, I am sure not many people would recognise it anyway.:)

Rambling Woods said...

Of course, I wouldn't have gotten it. I always wanted a salt water fish tank, but they are so much work and I was trying to do less work...

SAPhotographs (Joan) said...

I have to agree Michell, fresh water is so much easier. We used to have a large tank and I loved watching the fish.

Yes Sir. I will remember that. :)

I've only seen a few anemones and none like this one. I can't get over how clear the shot is. Wow!

I was lucky with this one TB, I always seem to get glare from the glass on the pics. Maybe I'm learning. :)
