Interesting facts about Ladybugs - Part 2

Ladybugs make a chemical that smells and tastes terrible so that birds and other predators won't eat them.

If you squeeze a ladybug it will bite you, but the bite won't hurt.
The spots on a ladybug fade as the ladybug gets older.

Larvae.
Ladybugs won't fly if the temperature is below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
The ladybug is the official state insect of Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Tennessee. The male ladybug is usually smaller than the female.

The Asian Lady Beetle can live up to 2-3 years if the conditions are right.
During hibernation, ladybugs feed on their stored fat.

Interesting facts about Ladybugs - Part 1

Although they are all yellow, each has a different color and pattern. Sorry for the poor quality of the second photogrpah but it was the only one I managed to get before he flew away.
There are nearly 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs worldwide and 400 which live in North America.
A female ladybug will lay more than 1000 eggs in her lifetime.

Ladybugs chew from side to side and not up and down like people do.
A ladybug beats its wings 85 times a second when it flies.
A gallon jar will hold from 72,000 to 80,000 ladybugs.
Aphids are a ladybug's favorite food.

Ladybug - Ladybird Coccinellidae

Ladybirds / Ladybugs come in many colors, some with spots and others with stripes. Most are carnivorous and feed on smaller insects like aphids, but some are herbivorus.
This is the Potato Ladybird and is enjoying a meal of this leaf.

The Lunate Ladybird and its larvae are mostly found on roses.
Ladybirds are extremely hard to photograph as the light shines on their smooth surfaces and reflects back as glare.
I think this is the Ten-spotted Ladybird.......
and its larva. (sorry this is not such a good picure but the only one I have.)
