Two ladybirds/ladybugs??

Or are they??
 No, as a matter of fact they aren't, even nearly the same as the top one is a beetle and the bottom is a bug. LOL!! More confusion. :)

Ladybirds/bugs belong to the Coccinellidae family. They are smallish have have a very smooth, glossy look about them. The one below belongs to the Scutelleridae family and is part of the Shield Bug family. It is almost 4 times the size of the Ladybird/bug and as you can see, it is not smooth but has indentations. This one is a Ladybird Bug. LOL!! I know, I know....more confusion. :)
 I have seen some amazing colors in Crab Spiders but this has to be the prietiest by far.
 Crab spiders belong to the Thomisidae family. They are all very small and cute.
 Now if you have to sit and wait for prey to come along so you can dine, surely there is a more comfortable place to do your waiting beside being on such a prickely plant?? :) Ah well, I guess beggars can't be choosers. :)

How does grass germinate?

At this time of year, all plants and trees have seeds on them and can be most attractive.

Now we all know that in order to germinate, seeds have to be planted under the soil. Right? Right!! So how on earth does grass seeds get there?

We have a theory here in Africa that at night, when everyone is sleeping, the monkeys go and plant them for us. :) But is it true? How DO they germinate? Okay, I will let you in on the secret.
 This particular type of grass like many others has a long tail attached to the seed and at the beginning of winter, fall onto the ground. They lay dormant until the first rains of spring and then Mother Nature shows how brilliant she actually is.

As the seeds get wet, they cause the tail part to contract and move. The barb on the tip of the seed will find a crevasse and get stuck there and now it can grow in the soil it is surrounded by. Do you believe this story?? Well it sounds better than the monkeys planting them doesn’t it?? :)
 Next time you come across any grass seed with long tails like that, dunk the whole thing in water for a few seconds, place it on the palm of your hand, wait a few seconds and see what happens. Eventually it will gravitate to the crevasse between your fingers and there it will stay. Clever hey? :)
 Some seeds look just like insects or caterpillars, like these black and pink ones. The pic of the black and yellow flowers/seeds is not very clear but I like the pastel shading of it.
 The Elephant grass is so tall at the moment that it is way over my head. Okay, I AM short but not THAT short. :) This is the one they cut and use for all those lovely thatched roofs we have here on some of our houses. Thatching not only looks nices but keeps houses cool in summer.

Autumn Walk - Part 1


It is that time of year when everything slows down and turns dull brown colors. The days are warm but the nights get really chilly especially out in the bush where I am staying now.



No more early morning walks for me as the dew on the grass at night makes it damp and unpleasant to walk through. My walk today took me down the path leading to a small stream and along the fence.



With no more rain this passed week, the stream does not have much water in it but the foliage around it is still fairly green. With the warmer days, there are still some bugs and butterflies around.



And what is this I see?? Can you see it too?



A very small Crab Spider still to cold to move out of its resting place where he spent the night.


Getting closer to him, he crawled up onto the flower. The flow itself is about 1 inch in diameter so it shows how small the spider is.




He is so well camouflaged on this yellow background. If he never moved, he would be difficult to spot.

Close up of a Carpenter Bee 2

There are many species of Carpenter bee found around the world and are easily recognizable by their large size.
In South Africa, there are about 36 species in this genus.

Carpenter bees tolerate higher ambient temperatures during foraging and most species are inactive in lower temperatures.

They provide better pollination service than honey bees.

Cuckoo Wasp

Family Chrysididae. They are small to medium in size and have an extremely hard body.
Most species lay their eggs in nest of solitary wasps and bees. The larvae feed off the provisions of the host.


In defence, they will roll up into a ball. Adults feed off flower nectar. A close-up of the body shows the roughness of the shell.

Butterflies - spot the difference

I wonder how many times I spot a butterfly or insect and think I already have a picture of it only to find that it is in fact different to what I have??
The two pictures below are a good example of this and how careful I have to be. See if you think they are the same......

Both these belong to the Pieridae family, genesus Mylothris. The one above is a Twin Dotted Border (Mylothris rueppellii haemus) and the one below a Common Dotted Border (Mylothoris agathina)

The difference being the two dots on the top of the wings. The top picture is the underside of the female Twin Dotted and the picture below is the underside of the male Common Dotted.

Beetle identification

Some of these can be very confusing at times and if I am not careful, it would be very easy to give a mistaken identity to some critters.
If you look at the beetle above and below this, you can see how similar the markings are and yet they are two different beetles.

The third one below also has an almost identicle patterns but at least the rest if him is lighter in color and is easier to tell apart.

The next two can be quite similar to the untrained eye......

yet once again, they are two totally different beetles.

Short days

We are going into winter, the days are getting shorter and a mist covers everything in the early mornings.
It seems that nowdays, I leave in the dark and get back in it too. The only nice thing about this time of year is that when I leave in the mornings, I see my beloved animals on the road and slow down to watch them a while.
We have had more than our fair share of rain the past few weeks and this poor man got stuck crossing the stream so I stopped to ask if he needed any help.




The best thing about rain storms is always the sunset. The colors are always so striking and rich.

Poor old frog!! Even though they are supposed to like water, I think the rain had become too much for him and he decided to take shelter in my kitchen. :)

Farm - Part 6

As dusk started to settle in, other insects and moths started to come out. A Damselfly finds a place to rest for the night.

A skipper hides in the grass where the predators cannot see him.

A very young cricket comes out to look for food or a mate. They make just as much noise as the bigger ones. :)

A lovely moth clings to a wall as the sun goes down on another day.......

Yellow Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) Tenebrionidae

Ever since I started bringing home mantis, chameleons and other predatory species in order to take better pictures of them, I have had to breed Mealworms to feed them. Surprisingly enough they are very easy to rear and this is done with easy and the minimum amount of fuss. The mealworm is not a worm; it is a larva. Any similarity to a true worm is incidental. mealworm larvae are golden yellow and have 13 segments—a head, three thoracic segments, and nine abdominal segments Mealworm larvae are the counterpart of the familiar caterpillar in the butterfly story. They pull themselves around on six stubby legs, one pair on each thoracic segment. Mealworms are the larval stage of Darkling (aka Tenebrio) beetles. Beetles, along with all their other insect kin (true bugs, flies, bees, wasps, ants, on and on), are members of the phylum Arthropoda, a word meaning jointed legs. Like all members of their phylum, insects wear their skeleton on the outside like a suit of armor. This is practical when they are under attack, but very inconvenient when they are trying to grow. Arthropods solved this problem by molting (shedding) this outer shell-like cuticle periodically. Immediately following the molt, the soft white larva expands before the new larger cuticle hardens. For mealworms this process repeats five times over a 2-month period, after which the larva is about 3 cm long. The final larval molt reveals the next stage, the pupa.
Life cycle Darkling beetles follow a life history known as complete metamorphosis. Like butterflies and moths, they go through four distinct stages during their life cycle. A female beetle lays eggs, as many as 500 in her brief lifetime of a month or two. The eggs are about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. After a couple of weeks the equally tiny larvae emerge from the eggs. The larvae are known as mealworms, but of course they are not true worms. The larvae are golden yellow and have 12 body segments. They are the counterpart of the familiar caterpillar in the butterfly story. Mealworms pull themselves around on six stubby legs that are all crowded at the front.
The larvae seem to have two purposes in life: eat and grow. Beetles are arthropods, and like all members of their phylum they wear their skeleton on the outside like a suit of armor. This is very practical when they are being attacked, but very inconvenient when they are trying to grow. The arthropods have solved this problem by shedding (molting) their shell periodically. Immediately following the molt the soft, white larvae expand before the new larger shell hardens. This process may repeat half a dozen or more times over a 3-month period, after which time the larvae are about 2 cm (3/4″) long. The final larval molt reveals the next stage, the pupa.
The pupae don’t eat and they don’t move except for a twitch or two when disturbed. Inside, however, the mealworm is turning into a beetle, much the same as a caterpillar turns into a butterfly while sequestered inside the chrysalis. In 2 or 3 weeks the pupa splits open and out walks a beetle, white at first, but soon turning to brown and finally black after a day. The beetles mate and lay eggs, and the cycle repeats.
